Being able to compete in any sports depends on
being in top physical condition. Today, most professional sports
such as basketball, football, and baseball have realized that the
success of their sport revolves around the health of its' athletes.
All sports have an industry that thrives on the success or players
they sponsor. In the past few years there have been several
corporations that have sponsored sports medicine teams that benefit
more than just one athlete or team, but the entire sport. For
example, the Justin Boot Company sponsors the Justin Healers Sports
Medicine Team for Pro Rodeo events, Asterisk Knee Braces sponsors
the Asterisk Mobile Medical Unit for Supercross events.
In 1996, Keith Shireman, a certified/licensed ATC (athletic trainer certified) and
past pro motocrosser, recognized the need to develop a sports medicine
program for motocross and began working with pro riders at motocross
events.
The
overwhelming response from the riders made him realize that the
addition of a sports medicine program was needed to ensure the
continued success of the riders and the sport. Motocross riders are
unlike other professional athletes in that their careers are shorter,
no injured reserve lists, and most importantly, no team trainer. The
need for qualified ATCs' to cover motocross events should be clear.

Motocross athletes-like other members of the population-need to be
educated about the role of the certified athletic trainer. The
riders should learn that not only can ATCs' provide care for them when an injury occurs,
but they can also prepare them for competition by taping, stretching,
and pretreating them. Evaluation and treatment after the event can also
be provided by ATCs', helping riders' performance over the course of a
season. In time, riders will come to understand that the care given by
an ATC will not only reduce their immediate pain but will decrease the
healing time and allow them to return to the track and participate.
In
1999, Keith founded MX SPORTS MEDICINE to provide the pro riders with
the evaluation and treatment of sports injuries that riders are subject
to as their level of competitiveness increases.
Our goal is to keep riders healthy so that the rider and sport
continues to thrive. In order to insure the programs success, funding
is needed for the purchase of equipment and supplies. MX SPORTS
MEDICINE is currently seeking sponsorship from a private or corporate
sponsor who like to be a part of our program. We offer several
different sponsorship packages to suit your companies needs. For more
